Young people taking part in the National Citizen Service (NCS), delivered in Belfast by Start360, have been to meet the staff at the Carlisle Centre on the Antrim Road, to hand over their 'young parent hampers'.
These lovely gifts were the inspiration of the young people and they put all the hard work into collecting donations and making up the hampers.
Niamh, who took part in NCS and had the idea for the hampers, said, ‘I chose this project because it seemed like a good way to get involved in volunteering and doing good deeds for those who need it most. NCS has opened a lot of opportunities for future jobs for me.’
The hampers are already in circulation, being taken to those who need them most by the staff team at the Carlisle Centre on the Antrim Road. The contain a mix of the most-needed items for babies, including nappies, baby wipes and sponges, as well as a small gift for mum.
Stephen Barr, Service Manager at Start360 said, ‘It’s been a privilege to work with this group of NCS young people and see their great idea for a social action project come to life. They were responsible for securing the support of friends and family, Start360 staff and shops including Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Lidl. We look forward to knowing that the donations have been put to good use.’
Corinna Crooks from Cooperation Ireland said, ‘National Citizen Service (NCS) is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity open to 15-17 year olds across England and Northern Ireland taking place during the summer and autumn holidays. The programme was established in 2011 to tackle three key social issues; social cohesion, social engagement and social mobility and so far over 270,000 young people have benefited from taking part. This group of young people have embodied the principles of a great NCS experience, involving participants from a range of backgrounds who have gelled to form a cohesive team. Their excellent social action project is clear evidence of what a group of engaged teenagers can achieve if given the means and opportunity. I’d like to congratulate the team and their leaders at Start360 on a great NCS programme.’
